St. Leonard’s C.E. (C) First School is a co-educational day school administered by the Staffordshire County Council Education Committee.  It caters for children from rising five to nine years of age and serves Dunston and the surrounding areas.  The small village school of Dunston offers a pleasant working environment where the pastoral care of the children is of a high standard as staff and children get to know each other easily.

Each child is valued and appreciated in the caring family atmosphere.  There is an emphasis on good behaviour, self-discipline and respect for each other, based on Christian values.

The school has three main teaching areas but also uses the neighbouring village hall for PE, Games, dance and other activities requiring a larger space.  School meals are provided by County Catering and are cooked on the premises.  Children may bring a packed lunch.  At lunchtime the children are supervised by lunchtime supervisors, who also supervise playground activities.  Cartons of milk and free fresh fruit are available for the children at morning break-times.

Outdoors there is a playground with an adjacent sports field.  A cultivated garden, wild garden and pond offer on-site environmental studies opportunities.  The school is proud of its permanent ECO-School status and has won area and national recognition for its environmental work.

Parents may, if they wish, come into school to help on a regular basis (subject to meeting police criminal record checks).

Formal links are established with Dunston Playgroup which uses the Village Hall next to the school building. A close liaison with Penkridge Middle School and the other First Schools in the pyramid group is established. The school also has close links with two small schools in our cluster: All Saints Primary School, Bednall and St. John’s First School, Bishopswood.  During the year various events are arranged with some of these schools, which gives the children the opportunity to work in larger groups with children of a similar age.
